Foreword
Szeged was buried by the waves of the Tisza in 1879, but as in various other instances in the history of the city, the devastation was followed by creation.
The houses that survived the flood, those built between 1880 and 1883, the late 19'^ century eclectic palaces, the later Art Nouveau buildings, and the Dóm Square, all in perfect harmony with the natural surroundings - as a unique architectual ensemble - survived even World War II.
The forced development tendencies of the 1960s and 70s (besides their undoubtable results) left incurable wounds on the body of the 'city with palaces' in some places. In spite of the several decade long distortions, the inner city has remained an unparalleled treasure, and restoration efforts began in the second half of the 1990s. As of today we have the tangible results of a conscious city rehabilitation, the city centre has been renewed and we can be proud of the palace city again.
In this book, the author eternalizes the sunny streets, the renovated palaces, the old and the new statues, and also immortalizes the lights of the evening. The preservation of the authentic state of Szeged, stepping into the new millenium, the representation of the city of sunshine makes this book a special work of art.
Please read through this 'picture' book by these two chroniclers with loving care and give a special place to our city in your heart.
