Bővebb ismertető
This modern statue in Parliament Square depicts Sir Winston Churchill (2), one of our greatest Prime Ministers. The Houses of Parliament, seat of our national legislature, stand near-by on the site of the ancient Palace of Westminster. Most of the Palace was burnt down in 1834 but the surviving Jewel Tower, Chapel, and Westminster Hall were incorporated into the new buildings begun in 1840. This enormous Gothic edifice (3), probably the largest in the world, contains over 500 apartments as well as the Central Hall, Clock Tower, and the House of Lords and the House of Commons. The latter was bombed in 1941 and had to be rebuilt. The Clock Tower, 320 feet high, is famous for its immense hour bell, known as 'Big Ben'. By night, the floodlit Houses of Parliament, reflected in the Thames (4), present an exquisite picture.
