On the 2nd of April, 1971, the emploijee« of the Hungarian Optical Works (MOM) stood with reverence before the grave of Nándor Süs,i, in memory of the founder of the ^oork.s, the fir,•it master of mechanical experts in Hiinyary.
On the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of his death, the workers of the factory placed a memorial wreath on the c/rave, following a profound appraisement of his achioements.
The life work, activities and significance of Nándor Si'iss were known, for a long time, only to a limited circle of specialists. It ivas only after the .lecond World War that his renown, and recognition of his merits were accepted as an honourable duty hy the ivorkers of a liberated ¦•iocialistic .state. His name appeared only then in the, Hungarian biographical encyclopaedia.
Nándor Sms ivas born on 25th September 1848 as the .son of an old, established family of mechanicians. His father, Werner Süss was mechanic to the University of Marburg, and his maternal grandfather, Theodor Schubart was the proprietor of a workshop of good renown, equipped for the production of physical and .scientific instruments, and in this workshop the young Nándor Süss acquired his mechanical .skill. He was tioenty years of age when he took over his grandfather's imrkshop. From here he was appointed by invitation as university mechanic to Physics Professor Quincke's institute at the university of Marburg.
On the 26lh April, 1876, Dr. Samuel Brassai, Dean of the University of Kolozsvár (now Cluj) invited Nándor Süss to Hungary, and with the permission of Ágoston Trefort, Minister of Religion and Public !education, offered him the po,sition of "Royal Hungarian University Mechanic" in Kolozs-
