The Budapest Museum of Fine Árts is the largest public art collection in Hungary, with a scope ranging from the relics of the great Mediterranean cultures of Antiquity through the painting, sculpture and graphic art of medieval Europe to the art of our times. Founded in 1896, on the occasion of the millennial celebrations of Árpád's conquest of Hungary, the Museum was opened to the public in 1906. The nucleus of the new Museum was förmed by two earlier public collections, the Gallery of the Hungárián National Museum, established in 1802, and the National Picture Gallery in the premises of the Hungárián Academy of Sciences, created in 1871, upon the acquisition of the Esterházy collection formerly kept in Vienna, which alsó included a remarkable collection of prints and drawings. Károly Pulszky's subse-
