Kosice District
THE CITY OF KOSICE
Kosice is the cultural, social and economic centre of the Kosice Region. It belongs among the cities with the rich and glorious past.
The city lies in the south-eastern part of the Slovak Republic in the territory with the area of 244 km^ About 242,000 inhabitants of the Slovak nationality live in it. However, also the citizens of other nationalities, such as the Hungarian, Romany and Ru-thenian nationalities, live here.
The city has been administratively divided into 4 districts based on the new territorial and administrative division of the Slovak Republic.
Its self-government is divided into 22 independent municipalities.
The first written mention on the city of Kosice is dated bock to 1230 when Kosice were mentioned as "Villa Cassa".
Archaeological findings have evidenced that people lived in this place as early as in the Old Stone Age some 35 -40 thousand years ago.
The town was built up by Saxonian colonists altogether with local inhabitants. In the period around 1290 Kosice
