In 1616, the English adventurer John Smith, fresh from a voyage of exploration to North America, wrote a book called A Description of New England. At the time, of course, the chief residents of "new England" were tribes of Native Americans - like the Abenaki, Narragansett, and Wampanoag -who would certainly have wondered at this name being applied to the mountains, lakes, forests, rivers, and seacoasts where they had físhed, hunted foraged, and grown their crops from time immemorial. But
