FOREWORD The state of New Hampshire is better known than any other by the nation of tourists at large. For this reason the numerous pictures, in a form to preserve, of the various portions of the state, will be the more valued by the public. The writer has an aflFection for New Hampshire, as he passed years of preparation there at Phillips Exeter Academy. It was in that state that he recovered and restored the famous Went-worth-Gardner House, which has now become the property of the Metropolitan Museum. This book is the fourth in the series on the States Beautiful. At the risk of showing a few pictures, the equivalents of which may perhaps have been made by others, we can but feel that various quarters of the state have been neglected. The writer has made all the pictures himself and has written the bulk of the text, but here and there a poem has been added with the name of its author attached. It is a dangerous thing to commend or to fail to commend. Especially in a state that is so largely given up to tourists' resorts, the risk of offending by sins of omission is very great. Please let it be understood that neither this book nor any of the series either directly or indirectly permits any advertising features. If we amplify upon the beauties of a certain district it is merely because we know that district better than some other, or we are more taken with it. The illustrations are more largely new than in any of this series thus far issued. The great body of them were made in the seasons of 1922 and 1923. Not a few are so fresh that they have actually gone directly, the first time seen, from our hands to those of the printer. All our view-points are not only partial but necessarily superficial.
