Oxford is 1,200 years old. Look at the map (opposite) of the centre of Oxford. Can you see High Street, Queen Street, St Aidâtes and Cornmarket Street? They meet at Carfax. These were the first streets of Oxford 1,200 years ago. Today these streets are full of shops, but you can also see Oxford's oldest buildings there.This tower (below) is the oldest building in Oxford today. It is in Cornmarket Street and it is 1,000 years old. 1,000 years ago, Oxford was a rich town, and it needed a wall around it. This tower was part of the wall.There is a church behind the tower. Now the tower is also part of the church.
