Rich history, wealth of architectural monuments and its social and cultural life make Prague, the capital of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic, a city of great significance in the world. It is Czechoslovakia's only city with over a millión inhabitants and one of the most important industrial centres. Prague is the seat of supreme state, scientific, educational, medical and cultural institutions. The development of Prague as the capital of an advanced socialist country proceeds from historical values and traditions which should be retained for future generations and enriched by new works of the socialist era. An awareness of the significance of this heritage makes it possible to blend new construction with inherited values. This book traces the history of Prague's úrban development, including the projects carried out over the past forty years since the end of World War II. It alsó outlines the present-day state of the city, its development aims and intended transformations in the coming decades.
