Experts believe the castle tobe founded some time after the mid-9th century.A second castle, Vysehrad, was establishedslightly southwards on a steep rock above theVltava River towards the end of the 10th century.Settlements and farmyards that started toform between the two castles have, over time,developed into the four historical Prague towns.First, the present day Old Town (Staré Mésto)became a town around 1231. Malá Strana(1257) and later Hradcany (1320) followed andfinally, according to a decision by Charles IV,the New Town (Nové Mésto) was establishedin 1348 with an unusual broad-mindedness.These four towns started to frequently becalled Prague. It was continuously changingand developing, it was rebuilt, enlarged andimproved, and its appearance has been formedby all of the existing building styles, with Gothicand Baroque styles playing the main part.Despite the modern building development inthe 19th and 20th centuries, the historical centreof the town has maintained its picturesqueancient character and boasts unusual amountof monuments, magnificent merchant's houses,aristocratic places, churches and monasteries,and a complex network of narrow lanes andintimate squares, as well as beautiful parksand gardens. The jewel in the crown is thegrandiose royal seat, the Prague Castle.A complex with such an exceptional andunmatched atmosphere is unique in the wholeof Europe, and it has been listed as a UNESCOworld cultural monument.Wer weiß schon, was den ersten geschichtlichbelegten böhmischen Fürst Borivoj ausdem Geschlecht der Premysliden dazuveranlasste, den zentralen Stammsitz in LevyHradec oberhalb von Roztoky an eine neueBurgstätte, später Burg Prag genannt, auf diefelsige Landzunge oberhalb der Mündung desBrusnice-Baches zu verlegen? Die Gründungdieser Burg erfolgte nach Angaben vonHistorikern nach der Mitte des 9. Jh. Am Endedes 10. Jh. wurde der Stammsitz um einezweite, auf dem steilen Felsmassiv hoch überdem Fluss erbaute fürstliche Burg - Vysehraderweitert. Im Bereich der Vorburgen wurdennach und nach Dörfer und Gehöfte angelegt.Im Laufe der Zeit entwickelten sich aus diesenAnsiedlungen die vier historischen PragerStädte. Als erste entstand um 1231 die heutigeAltstadt, es folgte die Kleinseite (1257), derHradschin (1320) und zuletzt (1348) trafKarl IV. die Entscheidung, die Neustadt mitungewöhnlicher Großzügigkeit zu gründen.Die vier Prager Städte wurden immer öftergemeinsam als Prag benannt. Das Stadtbildwandelte sich allmählich und in der Stadtwurden über Jahrhunderte hinweg sämtlicheBaustille sichtbar, vorwiegend prägten dieSilhouette jedoch Gotik und Barock. Trotzbaulicher Eingriffe im 19.und 20. Jh. bewahrtder Stadtkern weiterhin seinen reizvollenaltertümlichen Eindruck und wir finden ineinem Gewimmel von verwinkelten Gassenunglaublich viele Sehenswürdigkeiten,prunkvolle Bürgerhäuser, Adelspaläste,Kirchen und Klöster, romantische Winkel,herrliche Parkanlagen und Gärten. DiesePracht krönt ein königlicher Sitz allerersterGüte - die Prager Burg. Als Stadtensemblevon europäischem Rang mit einzigartigem undunvergleichbarem Flair wurde es in die ListeUNESCO als Weltkulturerbe eingetragen.
