Some-times a crisis is so acute, its impact on peoples lives and ona regions stability so immediate, it requires an emergencyintervention. Europe, and before that the United States,have been hard hit by the global financial crisis. The OpenSociety Foundations responded to the suffering caused bythe economic collapse by providing emergency funds toessential services and civil society organizations in Europeand the United States. It is not the first time Europeansand Americans have confronted such a situation and it isnot the first time the Open Society Foundations have usedemergency funds to ease the pain and turmoil that canaccompany economic crisis.
