In confronting this fascinating photographic assignment on Rome and Latium, I was aware of the notable difficulties I was going to face. The subject is vast and complex in its various and over interesting perspectives of interpretation. Rome has been recounted and illustrated, described and photographed in so many different ways: from the historical approach to the artistic, from the celebratory to the sociological, from the neo-realist to the intimist, from the approach through folklore to the sentimental approach to name just a few. Keeping the editorial characteristics of this volume in mind and after an attentive analysis, I finally adopted perhaps the most traditional, even obvious, interpretive approach. The approach which seemed the most logically possible was that which illustrated Rome through the evidence of the art and monuments produced during a millennial history. Therefore, I have followed a classic chronological order that begins with the vestiges of Republican and Imperial Rome and passes slowly through successive historical epochs to the E.U.R. skyscrapers of today's Rome.
