Romulus was succeeded by six klngs:The Sabine Numa Pompilius (715 BC - 673 BC);the Roman Tullus Hostilius (673 BC - 642 BC) under whom the city of Alba Longa was defeated; Ancus Március (641 BC - 617 BC); Tarquinius Priscus (616 BC - 579 BC), of Etruscan origin, like the Tarquins which followed, built projects like the Circus Maximus, the Cloaca Maxima and the Mammertine Prison; Servius Tuliius (578 BC - 534 BC), contributed to the growth of the city through reforms of state institutions, the construction of an aqueduct and an imposing wall surrounding the city (the Servian Wall).The tyranny of the last king, Tarquinius "the Superb", led the Roman people to overthrow the monarchy and establish the Roman Republic (509 BC).The urban growth of Rome under the monarchy was accompanied by a notable increase in the population. Rome had by then become an important political center, adorned by public works of notable artistic value; the Forum was paved and the Temple of Jupiter rose on the Capital Hill.
