HOW TO USE THE HEMISFAIR SUPPLEMENT This Supplement is designed to serve two purposes: (1) As a brief introduction to HemisFair '68, with emphasis on the lasting transformation that it has brought to San Antonio, and (2) As an updating of the originál edition of SAN ANTONIO: A HistoricaJ and Pictorial Guide, in order to show what has been added since 1959 to the city's points of interest, what has been changed, and what has been deleted. The Supplement is followed in this HemisFair Edition by the originál Guide in its entirety, and refers to its pages in each case where they give pertinent information, the page numbers being enclosed in parentheses, thus: PASEO DEL RIO (93) In this case, page 93 of the Guide gives information about the River Walk, as the Paseo was called in 1959. For a detailed history of San Antonio's River Bend, one may read the whole of Chapter IV, "The Bridge and the River." Readers who go in for history may find it rewarding to plunge forthwith into the Guide and then bring themselves up to date by a glancé at the Supplement. Those who are in a hurry may take the Supplement as a skeleton guide and then flesh it out with bits of background here and there. A new map of Downtown San Antonio (Map B, s8-s9) brings up to date the obsolete old one (Map 1, 36-37) in the Guide. Maps of HemisFair (Map A, s6) and the new Mission Trail (Map C, s21) are alsó included in this Supplement. It is too early, as yet, for a new, definitive map of Greater San Antonio, what with so many drastic changes on the drawing boards. The old one (Map 7, 260-261) may still prove helpful in locating points of interest. The same may be said for the other originál maps. Covering parts of the city where multiple change is either contemplated or scheduled or already on the ground, they should be used with caution.
