Almost half its stock ofabout 50,000 specimens ofthe recent period is contained in separate collections more than a hundred years old.One such, the Herbarium Waisbeckerianum, was established and maintained by a former chief medical officer (f Vas County, Antal Waisbecker (1835-1916), who was simultaneomly one of the outstanding botanists in the historical county at the turn of die 20th century. He donated much of his plant collection to the Cultural Aisocia-tion of Vas County (about 2,500 specimens), making him one ofthe fotmders ofthe natural history collecticns of the Szombathely museum. The first volume ofthis herbarium contains 388 cryptogams collected and in the main identified by Major Vilmos I'iers (1838-1920), a botanist and natural-history teacher at the militaiy secondary school in Kőszeg Almost 95 per cent of the 156 fimgus, 33 lichen and 198 hyophyte specimens were collected in or near the Kőszeg Hills, while two-thirds of the remainder come from the Borostyánkő range. Although most of the records weie published in variousflaristic papers, systematic publication is thought to be important for several reasons. For one thing the labels on the herbarium specimens often convey more information than was published, and for another, taxonomic revision and identification of synonyms have become necessary after a century. In the general description of the content of the material, the distribution and number of taxa [terjedelem és iaxonszám ] have alto been given for the fungi, lichens and mosses, along with the name of the collector or collectors [gyiljtők], time of collection [gyűjtési időszak], provenance, location (place ofdiscove>y) !lelőhelyek helységek] and revisers [revideálok].The .structure of the enumeration in each record is this: Old inventory number Result of earlier revision (including the name of the revi.Kr, and if known, the time of revision). The original data on the label (authors notes). Within the units divided by dashes are equals signs, denoting valid synonyms or cases where the nomenclattire had to be modernized. In all cases, the record starts with the latest valid name. Some fungus records end with the notes [n. det. ] and [p. del. ], denoting specimens that cannot or cannot precisely be identified respectively. The veiy few revision notes by Szemere in the fimgus list follow the origincd text of the label If further species names appear in the lichen and bryophyte lists, they identify additional specimens found in the pouch; these are listed at the end of the record, dividedfrom it by a plus sign.bevezetésA szombathelyi Savaria Múzeum természettudományi osztályának herbáriuma' hazánk legnagyobb vidéki növénygyűjteményei közé tartozik.
