Table Mountain, symbol of Southern Africa, one of the great natural landfalls and one of the best-known mountains of the world, looks north over the broad sweep of Table Bay and into the prodigious vastness ofth e African continent which, for 5,000 miles of forest desert, mountain and plain, stretches away before it to the distant shores of the Mediterranean. To all visitors, the dominant impressions of the African continent are its enormity, its emptiness of people, and its incredible variety of scenery, flóra and fauna. In the 472,359 square miles of South Africa there are only about 16,000,000 people, little more than 30 per square mile, while in the combined geographical area of Southern Africa, that is, South Africa, Rhodesia, South West Africa, Basutoland, Swaziland and Bechuanaland, there are little more than 20,000,000 people, about 15 per square mile. In an area which is one of the most richly mineralized 011 earth, with such immense variety in floral areas and climate, the possibilities for development and humán expansion are obvious. Compared to the congestion of Asia and Europe, Africa as a whole offers living space, while Southern Africa offers besides this a wonderful climate and all the essential materials for a life of prosperity in the sunshine.
