PREFACEIn the year of 1992 the United Nations will hold in Brazil its conference on Environment and Development. This event is organised for governmental representatives of the world in order to accept a new global strategy for environmental protection. It is hoped that this conference will be a turning point in the deteriorated connection scheme between man and environment, society and nature. The programme of the conference includes almost all important problems concerning the preservation of environment and nature, among them the conservation of biodiversity. The new document entitled World Conservation Strategy will also be presented here.It is the obligation of each and every nation of the world to explore and study with its available intellectual and economic potential the living world of its own nature conservation areas. By protecting national values at the same time the nations enrich the common natural heritage of mankind. This volume presents a real curiosity, since besides its extraordinary material also offers and opportunity to compare this material with the results of investigations performed forty years ago. Consequently an assessment of the changes and the accompanying trends can thereby be easily made.Gladly and proudly I recommend this valuable scientific work to the attention of the Reader.Budapest, I9th April, 1991ISTVÁN LÁNG Member of the Academy Secretary General of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences
