THE NATIONAL TRUST SiENTERPRISE NEPTUNESave our un^ilt coastlineThis booli celebrates all the varied aspects of the coast of Britain, and we welcome it.At the National Trust, our concern is with the stretches of coast that are still undeveloped. Britain has one of the most varied and beautiful coastlines in the world. It has high cliffs, great beaches, lonely saltmarshes, intricate sand dunes. Its colours range from the white cliffs ofDover to the red rocks ofDevon. Our coastlands offer beauty and open space which should be accessible to all. They are also places where people live and work, and where wild animals, plants and birds can survive.450 miles to goTwenty years ago, the National Trust launched Enterprise neptune as a fund to preserve the remaining 900 miles of unspoilt coastline around England, Wales and Northern Ireland. (Scotland has its own separate Trust).Acquiring the next 450 miles is not a pipe-dream but afinite goal. But we need funds available for whenever unspoilt coastline comes on the market. Neptune rarely has time to raise the money for each piece of coast that is threatened. For this reason, the National Trust is indeed grateful to W H Smith for making a contribution to Enterprise Neptune from the proceeds of each copy of "The Coasts of Britain" that is sold. There is a donation form on the back flap of the jacket for readers who may wish to make their own contribution. With your help, we can ensure that the remaining stretches of unspoilt coastline stay a reality for future generations.Left: Aberystwyth, Wales.
