The first edition of this hook appeared early in 1967 and ivas intended as a testimonial to our Centennial Year. We never expected that the demand for it would outlast 1967, hut for fifteen years the demand has heen constant. These have heen long years for all of us, and the psychic and political shiftings hoth in Canada and in the rest of the world have heen dramatic.
How much has happened since that spring afternoon in 1967 when Expo 67 was unveiled in Montreal! ?iature itself shone on us that day. The air was crisp, the wind'scoured sky was cloudless, heneath it the St. Lawrence flowed as Uue as the Athabasca, and the fields heyond the river were as green as Ireland. On the nver islands Expo 67, that perfect melding of French'Canadian flair and Anglo' Canadian practicality, marriage unique between art and technology, seemed to he holding its breath. Here at last was the outward and visible symbol of what Canada could not yet believe she had become.
One by one the flags of the visiting nations rose on their standards in La Place des Nations and were broken free, the name of each of them ringing out like a bell. The whole world seemed to be there. Finally the name "Canada" was spoken, the new Maple Leaf flag went up and instantly a squadron of R.C. A.F. planes cracked over in salute and burst upward like a fan of rockets into the blue.
