Bővebb ismertető
FOKEWOKD I ¦"'he creation of The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco in 1972 through the merger of the CaUfornia Palace of the Legion of Honor and the M. H. de Young Memorial Museum led to the consolidation and redistribution ofthe collections. All French paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts are now in the Legion of Honor in Lincoln Park, making this building modeled after the eighteenth-century Palais de la Légion d'Honneur in Paris the only museum in this country devoted principally to the arts of France. The Achen-bach Foundation for Graphic Arts, which functions as the Department of Prints and Drawings, is also located there, as is much of the Museums' collection of European tapestries and porcelains. The de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park displays art from all other European schools, ancient art, tribal weavings from the Near East and Central Asia, and art from Africa, Oceania, and the Americas. The American Galleries, dedicated to their primary benefactors, Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd, are also at the de Young. This publication offers a brief history of the Museums and a selection of works that represent the scope and quality of the collections. Selections were made by Ian McKibbin White (Director, 1972-1987) working with the curators to choose objects that present the character ofthe collections as well as their history and their direction for the future. Entries are arranged by collection and were prepared by the curatorial staff. The history of the Museums was compiled by the Publications Department in consultation with members of the curatorial staff and the Public Information Office. The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco are enormously grateful to The Fairmont Hotels/The Swig Foundations and to Grants for the Arts of the San Francisco Hotel Tax Fund for their generous support for the publication of Selected Works. Harry S. Parker III Director of Museums
