THE GRAND STAIRCASEThe Grand Staircase, which stands on the site of an open courtyard known as the Brick Court, can be approached from both the North Terrace and from the State Entrance in the Quadrangle. The present staircase was built by Salvin in 1866 to replace the one constructed by Wyatville some thirty years earlier. The statue of King George IV in the centre is by Sir Francis Chantrey, while the burly suit of armour below was made at Greenwich in about 1540 for King Henry VIII. The mounted figures on either side bear armour from the collection in the Tower of London, the one on the right dating from about 1530 and that on the left being of German workmanship of the 16th century. The notable collection of trophies includes the Colours of several British regiments now disbanded.Page 3
