THE OUTDOOR MUSEUM OF MINING OF THE MUSEUM OF TATABÁNYA SKANZEN OF INDUSTRY The Skanzen of Industry, established in 1988, is the first outdoor museum (organized in a natural environment) in Hungary which is not dealing with the rural conditions of life and work, but has been destined to givc an authentic pieture of industrial workers' and mainlv of miners' living and working conditions. The surfaee plants of the old shaft XV have been preserved in the state they werc once during mining. Offices of the works manager and the mining enginecr, a hall where the tasks of miners were announced (faléz), and a mineral exhibition can be visited in the office buildings. The historical memóriái park has gathered the monuments of the victims of mining. The reproduction of the gate of the first inclined shaft (slopc) of Tatabánya and the adjoining underground mine areas have been constructed as new spots of the exhibition. All these are completed by an open-air exhibition of machines. The permanent exhibition "Hangfürdő" ("Bath of Sounds") presenting Viktor Lois' statues of musical instruments was given to the public in the building of the former bath in 1996. This was the first step in the organization of international contemporary art exhibitions and summer art camps. The old miner house was opened in 1996 too, in this characteristic building of the miners' colonies of Tatabánya visitors can take a look into the living conditions of the different strata of miners. The changes in dwelling-culture from the turn of the century to the 1940s can be observed in the exaetly-furnished flats. After rcstoring the rest of the facilities and constructing the buildings of the old colonies, a cultural and recreational park will shape, the purpose of which will be the preservation of miner traditions.
