STRÖMGATAN l8by REBECKA MILLHAGENWHEN STRÖMGATAN 18was mentioned for the first time in i667 in a record of sites, it consisted of a simple wooden quay which then became a stone quay in the 1780s. However, the present quay in front of the Sager House and Rosenbad was not built until 1873 - 75-The block came about in combination with major street regulations in the mid-1600S and was originally called Leoparden (The Leopard), but in the late 1600s went under the name of Lejonet (The Lion). In 1783, on the eastern side of the block (site no.i), a palace was built for the sister of King Gustav ni, Sophia Albertina - the present Arvfurstens Palace. In 1906, the Arvfurstens Palace was acquired by the nation to accommodate the Department of Foreign Affairs and others.Site number two in the block, later to become the property of the Sager family, as did site number one, extended from Fredsgatan to Norrström. The first time the Sager site is mentioned in negotations is in 1644, when it was owned by the merchant Henrik Wulff. In the late 1600s and up to the 1770S, the site and buildings were owned by the Brahe and Gyllenstierna families. In 1772, it was sold to Captain Baron Anders Cederström.The Cederström property reappears on the 1771 map drawn by Jonas Brolin as two one storey buildings with minor wings in towards the courtyard (no. 29 on the map). Both dwellings were of stone and equipped with elegant roofs. In 1773 the two properties were combined by an additional one-storey residential building with a drawing-room, bedroom and salon in the west part of the building. The same plan of the building remains largely today. The plans for rebuilding were carried out by J.W.Elies, who added an avant-corps, groins and a pediment to the façade. The design of the façade was primarily influenced by the traditional classicism characteristic of many distinguished buildings of 1770s Stockholm. In 1795, Lejonet 2 was sold to a business man, Elias von Langenberg, and another floor added to the east wing. In the 1830s, the house became the property of the Ekermann family. The brothers Robert and Edvard Sager purchased the Lejonet 2 property from Major Nils Ekermann in 1880. After a while, the brothers bought each other out and Robert Sager became the sole owner. In 1883, Robert Sager applied for permission to rebuild the façade facing Ström-gatan. The windows on the upper floor were enlarged and turned into French windows with wrought iron railings.
