Bővebb ismertető
Foreword
Erzsébetváros is probably the most colorful and most versatile part of central Budapest when it comes to the image and characteristics of the city. It is a district with a thousand faces thanks to the rich heritage of the past, and works of art and culture made through the centuries, all within a modern urban environment. As the fruit of a long and studious research, this book was first published in 2011 in Hungarian with the title Ezerarcú Erzsébetváros (The Thousand Faces of Erzsébetváros). By flipping through this book, you can participate in a unique, nostalgic walk where you can see the dignified but busy old Budapest right in front of you.
Our book was so popular that in 2015 we conceived the idea of a second, expanded edition. This new publication not only depicts both the past and present of the district, it is translated into English as well for the delight of visiting tourists and foreign guests. Our intent was to also provide researchers with valuable and credible local historical data available in a common foreign language.
Erzsébetváros went through outstanding developments in recent years, so besides contemporary photographs and archivalia concerning the historical city center of Budapest, you can also get acquainted with present events. I am convinced that we in Erzsébetváros have a lot to offer, and we can be proud of our city, our streets, our squares and our historical buildings.
Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to the Legenda Cultural Association for their laborious work with the collection and processing of various sources and photographs used in this book. I would also like to thank ERöMŰVHÁZ Nonprofit Ltd. for publishing this book.
Please, take this book, filling in a void, and read it with gusto.
