I^ooking down from the hills on which the monasteries of Galata and Cetá-tuia, two interesting monuments of Moldávián feudal architecture, stand, the age of the town of Jassy appears to be suggested by the harmonious blend of the old towers, steeples and cupolas with numberless new structures. The contrast of vo-lumes and colours - the counterpoint of a pleasant harmony is not devoid of grace. The traveller who has not seen the town in the last five or six years is sur-prised by the predominance of a new, modern style which has replaced the old buildings typical of a provinciai markét town. Historical monuments somé of which are very old - lose none of their splendour when set in modern surround-ings; on the contrary, their architecture is all the more strikingly set off.
