PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION The first edition of The UnDutchables has proved more successful than we ever imagined, and in a direction we never thought possible. Originally conceived as a work intended for British tourists, it has yet to sell one copy in that fair Isle. This second edition corrects and updates somé subjects and adds material previously omitted. /As we are now far away from that Magic Kingdom-of-the-Water, and can no longer keep a watchful eye on daiiy Dutch iife, please accept this as THE COMPLEAT UNDUTCHABLES. February 15, 1991 PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION If you're planning to spend time in Holland, this account will give you an idea of the other side of the ditch. This work is the result of two persons' experience of living in the Netherlands for a combined totál of 22 years of self-imposed exile among the Dutch, affectionately known as CLOGGIES. During our residence, we experienced manyfacets of Dutch Iife - THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY. THE GOOD is already reflected in a multitude of works in most western libraries and tourist book shops; THE BAD is reflected in many média reports concerning drug abuse, sexual promiscuity, etc. Somé will feel that this work constitutes THE UGLY. We attempt to focus on the things that the average CLOGGY today holds dear: on the apparent obsession with land, Iife and liberty.. .the down-toearth (or rather in this case, down-to-sand) aspects of Living in Holland.
