View of Munich showing the Theatine Church nestled against the city walls; excerpt from a print by Michael Wening, 1701Former Theatine Foundation Church ST CAJETAN'S MUNICHPatronal Feast: August 7th Foundation and Construction HistoryMunich's Theatine Church, which has been under the auspices of the Dominicans since 1954, owes its existence to the fulfilment of a solemn pledge made by the Bavarian Elector Ferdinánd Maria (1636-1679) and his spouse Henriette Adelaide of Savoy (1636-1676) on the occasion of the birth of Crown Prince Max Emánuel on July 11, 1662. Agostino Barelli of Bologna (1627-1687) was successfully engaged to be the architect, and he proceeded to take St. Andrea della Valle in Romé as his model. Antonio Spinelli, a Theatine priest versed in construction, took charge of building, which led to quite a few quarrels. The Elector laid the foundation stone with his own hand on April 29, 1663. By 1672, the nave had been vaulted, giv-ing Carlo Brentano Moretti the opportunity to begin the stuccowork. Work on the dome was taken up in 1674. At the same time, Enrico Zuccalli (1642-1724) took over supervising construction, following Barelli's departure from Munich as a result of his constant quarreling with Spinelli. Barelli had, however, already completed most of the shell before leaving.
