INTRODUCTORY NOTE When we first pubhshed Trade Unions in Britain, long ago in 1980, we knew that the political and economic order in Britain was changing convulsively, and we did not expect that the trade union movement would escape important changes itself. But in the intervening years between the publication of that first edition and the preparation of this new Fontana Press version, the whole landscape has altered. The result is that large parts of this work are completely new. We have tried to provide a straightforward introduction to Britain's unions, and to allow the facts to speak for themselves. Any book on industrial relations is bound to be stiff with initials. Not only do the trade unions themselves delight in acronyms which make a complicated puzzle, but they also multiply joint bodies, confederations and alhances, each of which is normally known by some abbreviation or other. A list of all the unions which are named in this book (and some which are not) will be found in the index of trade unions on page 427. Each acronym commonly used by such unions is decoded in that index, which is cross-referenced. A variety of other industrial relations bodies are also normally referred to by their initials. A hst of these bodies will be found on page 407.
