SPATIAL AND DEMOGRAPHIC FEATURES The Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina was constituted as a Federation of Cantons through an agreement signed in Washington (1994) by representatives of Bosniak and Croat nationalities. Pursuant to The Federation Constitution, Cantons are administrative and territory units with a high degree of self-rule. One of the Cantons in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina is alsó Tuzla-Podrinje Canton. In regard of changes caused by the aggression to the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina and by an internál reorganization of Bosnia and Herzegovina (Dayton Accords, 1995) into two administrative legal entities: the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republic of Srpska,Tuzla-Podrinje Canton was established of parts of former North-Eastern Bosnia Region, that is, ofTuzla Region. Pursuant to provisions of the Dayton Accords, the area of Tuzla-Podrinje Canton is territorially rounded by the entirety or by parts of fourteen municipalities: Banovici, Brcko, Doboj-East, Gradacac, Gracanica, Kladanj, Kalesija, Celic, Lukavac, Srebrenik,Teocak, Sapna, Zivinice and Tuzla. New municipalities, established during the war, are: Celic,Teocak, Sapna and Doboj-East.They were established on the territory given to the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, previously belonging to former municipalities: Doboj, Lopare, Ugljevik i Zvornik, that were given to the Republic of Srpska by the Dayton Accords. Only Banovici, Srebrenik and Zivinice municipalities remained within its previous border-lines, while all other municipalities' portions were annexed to the Republic of Srpska.This way Tuzla-Podrinje Canton was separated from its natural borderlines, Drina and Sava rivers, providing exit to the East and North.Thus a geographic, economic, infrastructure, environmental and demographic entirety was deranged. Tuzla-Podrinje Canton covers the area of 2,908 km2, that is I I. I % of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina territory or 5.7% of Bosnia and Herzegovina territory. According to estimations dated I996,there are 61 1,500 inhabitants living at this territory, 35% of this number are displaced and expelled refugees.Tuzla-Podrinje Canton participates with 26.2% in the number of inhabitants of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. At the territory of former Tuzla Region, according to 1991 census, there was 949,621 inhabitant, out of it: 525,427 Bosniaks (55.33%), 268,581 Serbs (28.28%), 83,320 Croats (8.78%) and 72,293 inhabitants declared themselves as 'the others' (7.6l%).Today at the Canton territory, after all demographic dislocatiöns, Bosniaks compose about 90% of population.
