A -í \.s a result of the one-and-a-half century struggle for systematical university education of agricultural sciences, first in European relation, our country commenced the higher education in agriculture. As early as in the 16th and I7th centuries, agricultural knowledges were educated in Nagyszombat and Sárospatak. In 1797, the "Georgicon", the first independent college of agriculture of the world, was established in Keszthely. In addition to the independent higher education, at the "József Technical University", Buda, a Department of Agriculture functioned from the 19th century. In 1919, in the period of the Hungárián Soviet Republic, the plan of settlement of the higher education of agrarian sciences was developed, there, however, was no way of bringing it into existence. Since 1920, one of the sections of theFacultyof Economics provided for the education of agrarian sciences, while in 1934, agricultural education was effected at five faculties of the "József Nádor" University for Technical and Economic Sciences. The Institute of Teacher Education in the framework of this University for the education of agricultural secondary school teachers was established in 1936. The independent University of Agricultural Sciences was established with the help of the Government on the 26th September 1945. The organization of the University of that time consisted of 4 faculties: Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Faculty of Veterinary Sciences, Faculty of Forestry and Faculty of Horticulture and Viticulture. The Faculty of Agricultural Sciences had sections in four cities of the country: Budapest, Debrecen, Keszthely and Mosonmagyaróvár. Thus the University-with the Faculty of Forestry in Sopron-had altogether 5 headquarters. The campus is situated on 247 hectares, at the most beautiful place of Gödöllő. The University owed its actual opportunities to large-scale investments continuously granted for the period of two decades by the Government. As a result of the many hundred millions program, the new building of the Faculty of Farm Mechanization has been built, apprentice workshops, machine-sheds have been put in operation; moreover, a new seminar building for llOOpersons, a college for 1200 persons-furthermore, 5 up-todate lecture halls, drawing-rooms, experimentál areas, surgery, kitchen, a restaurant for 2500 persons, a housing estate with 150 flats, a nursery for 72 children, a shopping centre have been put at the students' disposal, moreover, road-network, sewage system, electric network and oil-fired boiler house have been established, aswell.
