Introduction • Einleitung Whether it stands on the edge of the Grand Canal which winds through the city, or whether it faces onto a quiet secondary canal or a square, the Venetian palace has always been the object of unreserved admiration ever since the beginning ofVenice's long history. It is not only the richly structured façades of the palaces, in the formal refinement and the elegance of every single element, that have always aroused a sense of fascination in the visitor who can identify signs of the prestige and wealth of their owners. The interiors are also furnished and decorated with an incomparable magnificence that emphasizes the social standing and political influence of those who lived in them. The luxury and opulence that marked the lifestyle within the palace walls is amply described, at the end of the i6th century, by Francesco Sansovino in his Venetia citth nobilissima: "As for the incredible ornaments, furnishings and riches in the houses, whether they are large or small, it is impossible to imagine, let alone fully describe them in writing. Schon das Äußere der Palazzi fasziniert. An den reichgestalteten Fassaden mit all ihrem erlesenen Zierat lassen sich Macht, Status und Reichtum ihrer Besitzer ablesen. Aber auch die herrlichen Innenräume, die unvergleichlich prächtig ausgestattet wurden, lassen das Herz höher schlagen. Luxus und Überfluß kennzeichneten das Leben in den Palazzi. Francesco Sansovino beschrieb die Ausstattung dieser besonderen »vier Wände« ausführlich Ende des 16. Jahrhunderts in seinem Werk Venetia citth nobilissima: »Was die opulente Dekoration, die vornehme Möblierung und die unglaublichen Reichtümer der Häuser angeht - seien es nun kleine oder große Gebäude ist es unmöglich, sie sich vorzustellen oder gar zu beschreiben. Qu'il se dresse aux bords du Grand Canal dont le cours sinueux traverse la ville ou qu'il donne sur un canal secondaire ou sur une place, le palais vénitien a toujours été l'objet d'une admiration inconditionnelle depuis l'origine de l'histoire millénaire de Venise. Non seulement la structure architecturale du palais, dans sa recherche formelle et dans le raflinement de chaque élément particulier, a toujours suscité de l'étonnement chez le visiteur, qui y a repéré les signes du prestige et de la richesse des propriétaires de la demeure, mais les intérieurs, meublés et décorés avec un faste quasi incomparable, constituaient une mise au point ultérieure des conditions sociales et du poids politique de ceux qui les habitaient. Le luxe et l'opulence qui caractérisent la vie a l'intérieur du palais est exhaustivement décrite, a la fin du XVIeme siecle, par Francesco Sansovino dans son Venetia citta nobilissima : « Quant aux ornements, aux bibelots et aux richesses incroyables de la maison, aussi bien des nantis que des petits bourgeois et des pauvres, il est impossible de les imaginer et meme de les décrire de façon a les rendre pleinement.
