AN INTRODUCTIONT 0" ANTIQ. TJE RECORDS "I have collected old gramophone records for many years, during which time I have done business with most of the established dealers and have corresponded with a great number of people in different parts of the world.Throughout this period, one factor has emerged with increasing significance. Record collecting is a young hobby - and it displays mariy of the characteristics of youth. It tends to be conservative and to display resolute opinions. It is unsure of itself in unfamiliar territory and, perhaps most infuriating of all, there are many times when its knowledge is either underdeveloped or it is even totally uninformed.I then began to perceive a new kind of recard selling organ-isation. There were to be three principal objectives:i) It would be fast, efficient and ready to cater for special needs.ii) Whilst being attractive to established collectors, it would try to influence the musioians, the his-torians, the librarians, the actors and people who are simply intrigued by music, the theatre and doc-umentary accounts of the past.iii) It would have a responsibility for storing knowledge about records and recordings, for releasing this in special features and so being educational in the broadest sense of the term.I regard this whole question of knowledge and information as being especially significant. There are many gaps in history because so many people were unable, or thought it unnecessary, to write things down. To make matters worse, the humán memory is notoriously fallible
