ForewordThe idea of writing this book occurred to Arthur Ashe as we were walking down a fairway on the East Course of the Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, New York, in the fall of 1990. One member of our group was Frank Hanni-gan, the former executive director of the U.S. Golf Association and, like Arthur, an analyst for ABC Sports. Arthur had just responded to a couple of Hannigan's questions about Levels of the Game, John McPhee's book about Arthur and Clark Graebner and their 1968 semifinal match at the U.S. Open.When he had finished answering Hannigan, Arthur turned to me, his instruction-writing collaborator for eleven years at Tennis magazine, and said, "We ought to do a book."Our original notion was for Arthur to answer the most frequent questions he was asked about tennis. We did hours of interviews for the book in late 1991 and early 1992 and started writing chapters. He then began work on his memoir, D^zyi of Grace. But he never stopped thinking about this book. He kept polishing the material. The last time we spoke he reiterated his intention, once Days of Grace was done, to complete work on this book and his desire to see it published.XI
