THE msm
ifiere was trouble inside and outside Egypt. The priests of the old gods plotted against the pharaoh Akhenaten. From the northeast the warlike Hittite people threatened to invade. So Akhenaten and his advisers thought up a desperate plan.
Now the story is taken up by Setna, a young scribe at Akhenaten's court:
Or
day I was commanded to attend an audience with the king and his advisers. They told me I had been chosen to accompany the chief minister, Khunanup, on a dangerous and secret journey. We were to travel to the Hittite camp at Hamath. There, we were to send a message to the Hittite king at his capital, offering the hand of Akhenaten's eldest daughter to the Hittite king's son - on the condition he agreed to worship the sun-god, Aten. This prince would then become Egypt's next pharaoh.
Only in this way would it be possible to turn the Hittites into friends of Egypt and to ensure that the worship of the sun-god continued after Akhenaten's death.
