Composing the ImageChoosing a ViewpointThe choice of viewpoint is central to the composition of an image and one of the most important decisions a photographer must make. When photographing gardens, remember that they have been designed with certain vievipoints in mind. Although this should by no means restrict your choice of camera angles, it is well worth taking into account.SeeingThis ornate iron screen set into the stone archway caught my eye as I walked towards the rose garden.ThinkingThe garden beyond was in full sunlight and the archway was in shade, and I thoughtthat the darker foregroundshape would create an effective frame for a picture of the garden, as well as creating a heightened sense ofdepthActingMy first thought was to shoot the archway f rOnt-On so that its shape was symmetrical. But from that viewpoint the pinnacle of the iron screen coincided with the top of the tree and the two details became confused. Also, from here the highlighted statue was right on the edge of the arch and became a distraction instead of a strong feature. I moved a few feet to my right which avoided these two problems and presenteda more pleasing perspective of thearchway.Leeds Castle gardens near Maidstone in Kent, UK.This shot appealed to me as the clumps of daffodils were in a pool of shade and the darker area of grass behind them acted as an effective background, making them seem even brighter. I chose 0 viewpoint which allowed me to place a section of the rustic wooden fence behind them to odd 0 further element to the composition.Tfir;hnina.1 nfit.a.i1g 6 X 4.5cm SLR camera with a 105-210mm zoom lens and 81B warm-up filter; Fuji Velvia.
