W. Ben Hunt was born in Wisconsin about ninety years ago. Most of his life was spent in teaching, creating artwork, writing, and lecturing about the out-of-doors. He was a self-taught expert on the crafts of the Plains and Woodland Indians, and he wrote about, and for, scouts of all ages.
How to Build and Furnish a Log Cabin is a compilation of two of Ben Hunt's books: Building a Log Cabin, first published in 1947, and Rustic Construction, first published in 1939. Both of these books are reproduced exactly as they first appeared, with the drawings and photographs that W. Ben Hunt produced and selected for the original editions.
Even if you live in a city or suburb, you've probably thought of owning a rustic cabin: a place all alone by the quiet of a lake, or snuggled in the side of a mountain. A primitive but cozy den, complete with a warm fireplace and dancing shadows.
Our forefathers built homes using the woods around them and furnishing them with slab furniture. They built durable, dry, windproof, strong, and protective dwellings using only hand tools. You can do it, too.
In this day of power saws, lumberyards, and constantly rising prices, perhaps it is good to think back on a simpler time when the bark was left on the trees, and tables, chairs, and beds were fashioned from split half-logs.
We believe that W. Ben Hunt would be delighted if everyone would try his hand at truly rustic construction. But if you're not ready for an
