Hungarian Film - Alive and Kicking
Every friend of Hungarian cinema, and everybody who is familiar with Hungarian film knows that during the great boom of the 1960's Hungarian film broke free of its political seclusion.
In the past 30 years Hungarian filmmakers have made films in diverse situations, under diverse circumstances keeping Hungarian cinema alive and kicking. In order to achieve their goal, they have had to become experts in almost every form of artistic ingenuity, skills of survival, as well as technical and financial inventiveness.
It is a unique feature of Hungarian cinema that its creators (directors, producers and cinematographers) like to be the masters of their own fate. They recently worked out a draft Film Act comprising all the fields of filmmaking and film distribution, since with the advent of the new political system, and the disappearance of the iron curtain, Hungary has emerged from isolation and appeared on the „big international market". We are confident that a Film Act will be created which, in harmony with Hungary's joining the European Union, will regulate the degree of government support, the reorganisation of the Hungarian film industry and the operation of a nation-wide network of art theatres. The Hungarian Motion Picture Public Foundation would play a crucial role in an overall cultural and industrial revival in filmmaking.
