PREFACEModern thought which, after the world war, had gained sufficient momentum to affect profoundly our fundamental viewpoints even in science and fine art, quite naturally wrought havoc alsó in the field of Chess. For Chess, a? distinguished from other games, provides a playful expres-sion for our artistic and scientific tendencies, not usually en-couraged by games emphasizing the competitive element.Mitchell's guide to the game was written just a few years before the weight of modern Chess ideas made itself felt in Chess contests throughout the world. In this new edition the publishers therefore considered it best to offer a complete revision which might serve as an elementary text book for the student of modern Chess. In complying with the publishers' request to write this revision I have tried to hold down to a minimum all matter the reader might be tempted to commit to memory, for memorizing moves will never make a good Chess player. What is needed is an understanding of the reasons behind those moves. These reasons all spring from a few generál laws of strategy which are easily grasped. The student who carefully peruses the chapter on these principles of Chess strategy will find himself improving rapidly with practice as long as he consciously applies them to his game. The examples from Master play which are appended explain in detail how the expert does it.Edward Lasker.
