¦^HE DAWN OF A NEW millennium provides an appropriate time to reflect back and to look forward. On those occasions when the odds seem loaded against me, it is sobering to recall the difficulties wildlife photographers faced when working more than a century ago. For example, transporting cumbersome whole plate cameras into the field became a major expedition. The slow speed of the emulsion made static subjects virtually obligatory, and some nature photographers even resorted to posing stuffed animals out on location!
Today, lighter equipment and faster film stock no longer place limitations on where wildlife photographers can work, or what subjects they choose to photograph. Modern, sophisticated metering systems also make it relatively easy to get correctly exposed pictures. Memorable images, however, depend more on having fast hand-eye coordination to capture a fleeting moment, or the imaginative
WINTER RAINBOW
From a previous summer visit, I knew that if the sun was shining, a rainbow would be visible in front of the south-facing waterfall for much of the day. A polarizing filter helped enhance the saturation of the spectral colors.
