The History of the Dog
Forty million years ago there were small, long-tailed, tree-climbing creatures called Miacids. These fierce animals prowled the forests of the land we now know as North America. From the miacids came three groups of descendants:
Amphicyon - wolf-sized bears Borophagus - hyaena-like creatures Tomarctus - long-legged foxy dogs It was the group called Tomarctus which led on to all the living breeds of domesticated dogs and to their wild relatives, foxes and wolves.
