Each of the gardens selected for this book was created by individuals who desired to leave the world a bit more beautiful because of their work. While the American South is blessed with a multitude of lovely gardens, it was not possible to include all of these within a single volume. The gardens chosen vary from small to large, simple to intricate. There were two main criteria for selecting the gardens. First, each illustrates a different period of the history of the South. From the opulent plantation gardens of antebellum days to the stark utilitarian gardens of Old Salem, each speaks eloquently of the people and the times in which they were created. The Biltmore Gardens were built for a different reason than the simple, elegant modern Gardens for Peace, and each reflects the stories and the dreams of the people who created them. The second criteria was that each of these gardens is still closely associated with their founders. Most were family gardens that grew into places of such beauty, the owners desired that they be opened to the public. Through the generosity of families such as the Bellingraths, the Vanderbilts, the Callaways and the Blisses, we can now share in the grandeur of these gardens. We are fortunate that we are the recipients of such a wealth of beauty.
