CiMiM CTERISTICS OF THE DOG Man and dog have been closely associated for many centuries — in fact, while its precise origins are unknown, the dog is thought to have been the first domesticated species. Throughout history, the dog has fulfilled a variety of roles — as a guard dog, herder, hunting companion and guide — although today it is probably best loved for the affection and friendship it offers as a pet. Different breeds vary tremendously in appearance and physical characteristics, but all dogs share certain fundamental behavioural traits of obedience, loyalty and adaptability. They can also be distinguished from other mammals by their sensitive natures.
