A practical hint When shopping for plants choose those suited to the intended spot; most plants will have tags attached indicating their requirements. Abutilón hybrids • Good light • Temp:10-18°C(50-65T) • Keep moist and fed There are numerous varieties, with pendulous bell-shaped flowers in a range of colours, and some have colourful foliage. Many of the abutilons are worthy of a place in the houseplant collection for their foliage alone. Most are of vigorous habit, and capable of attaining a height of some 1.8m (6ft) with their roots confined to a pot of about 18cm (7in) in diameter. However, pruning of over-vigorous growth presents no problem and can be done at almost any time of the year. Firm top sections of stems will not be difficult to root in a fresh peat and sand mixture. Feed well when they are established. Light, airy and cool conditions suit them best, and they will be the better for spending the summer months out of doors in a sheltered position. Use a loam-based potting mixture.
