INTRODUCTION
THE PICTORIAL CYCLOPEDIA OF PHOTOGRAPHY will answer all the questions any photographer is likely to encounter.
It grew out of the famous "Focal Encyclopedia of Photography", a two-volume work of 1700 pages and 2,400 contributions by 276 experts from 28 countries—the best known book of its kind and the most used source of reference on photography in the world.
This is by no means simply an "abridged" edition of it. It is an altogether different book, tailored to the interests and needs of the active amateur. It preserves the authority of the original, while offering its own spirit, style and presentation.
The choice of its title was no accident. "The Pictorial Cyclopedia" concentrates on the picture-making process, illuminating it step by step with photographic examples that matter as much as does the text.
The aim of the editors was to include everything the photographer could want to know. The choice was not easy and, if anything, they erred on the generous side. Highly specialised types of photography, of interest only to professionals, could safely be omitted. Historical background material and advanced theory could likewise be put aside. But the truly ambitious photographer needs to know something about what goes on inside the camera or the developing tank. So there is a generous amount of basic knowledge spread carefully through the predominantly practical text, lavishly supported and elucidated by 223 explanatory diagrams.
The work is thoroughly encyclopedic in its coverage of all practical aspects of photography. The text is always straightforward, concise and free from technical jargon.
The alphabetical arrangement makes consultation easy, while those who like to browse can pick out the longer articles and read at leisure. If they come across an unfamiliar term, they will find it unfailingly explained in one of the shorter entries.
