EDITOR'S FOREWORD
The original manuscript for this handbook came to me under most unusual circumstances. It was given to me by a neighbor of mine, the editor of a large publishing house that has a department specializing in educational books. One day, while he was at breakfast, the doorbell rang and he answered it himself, thinking it might be the morning papers, which were late. To his surprise there was no one at the front door, and instead of the expected dailies, a thick roll of typescript reposed on the mat.
As a publisher he was used to scripts being delivered in unorthodox ways, but he was puzzled to see the street quite empty and devoid of any retreating figure, since it had taken him only a few seconds to answer the bell. He was even more astonished when a cursory examination of the manuscript indicated that it was either the work of a lunatic, a madman or hoaxer, or a book of some kind written entirely in code of an uncommon type.
