I first began to think seriously about a complete guide to casino gambling when Resorts Intemational opened its casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Until that time, only Nevada had legalized gambling, and although most Americans loved to gamble, the hypocritical moral attitudes in practically every state in the Union forced people either to do it illegally or travel to Nevada. The legalizing of gambling in Atlantic City was a breakthrough as far as the American attitude toward gambling was concemed. But it wasn't only this feeling about legalized gambling being the wave of the future that propelled me to write this book. It was the win figures and profit margins coming out of Atlantic City that completely stunned me and made me head straight for the typewriter. The profit figures coming out of Resorts Intemational were unbelievable! The more their stock rocketed on the American Stock Exchange, the more I believed that this book had to be written. Either the games at Atlantic City were rigged so that few could win, which I knew wasn't the case, or else the thousands of gamblers crowding into the casino didn't know what they were doing.
