Author's Preface
My writing always arises out of preaching. My series on 1 Timothy (of which a compressed version is found here) was one of the more dramatic times of my life. I had boxes of notes of related reading, some of which came with me so that I could keep writing during one of the most varied preaching trips 1 ever made. In South Africa, Kenya, India, Singapore and Malaysia, for about ten weeks in the early part of 1999,1 travelled and wrote and preached on 1 Timothy, with a five-day break in Nairobi in the middle. At one time amidst snow-drifts in a Swiss winter and at another in hot, steamy north Malaysia, eating everything from squid in Penang to boerewors in Durban, 1 Timothy came into being (although I sometimes digressed into other topics) in various parts of three continents. I preached to Chinese expatriates, Tamil-speakers and Malays, Swiss people and Germans, South African black and white and in-between, in pulpits ranging from the superb raised platform of Westminster Chapel to the wooden house in Bangalore where in five days 1 preached eighteen expositions, each an hour long. I was translated at different times into German, Tamil, Cantonese and Zulu.
The happiest times of those days were the times in the east when I saw a good number of Hindu friends come to salvation. My worst days were the times when I got over-tired and the day when my voice totally gave out after thirty-five minutes' preaching. I was twice badly sick. Once I was able to medicate myself from a hoard of medicines I was carrying. The second time I was staying with a doctor and he gave me what I needed! Durban was a life-saver; I preached only once or twice a day and slowly recovered in strength.
