Preface
There is a need for a series of biblical expositions that are especially appropriate for English-speaking people throughout the world. Such expositions need to be laid out in a way that will be useful to those who like to have their material presented clearly, point by point - or (if they are preachers), to put across their material clearly, point by point. They need to avoid difficult vocabulary and advanced grammatical structures. They need to avoid European or North American illustrations. Preaching Through the Bible seeks to meet such a need. Although intended for an international audience, I have no doubt that their simplicity will also be of interest to many whose first language is English.
These expositions are based upon the Hebrew and Greek texts. The New American Standard Version and the New International Version of the Bible are recommended for the reader, but at times the expositor will simply translate the Hebrew or Greek himself. It is not our purpose to deal with minute exegetical detail, although the commentator has to do work of this nature as part of his preliminary preparation. But just as a housewife likes to serve a good meal rather than display her pots and pans, so we are concerned with the 'good meal' of Scripture, rather than the 'pots and pans' of dictionaries, disputed interpretations and the like. Only occasionally will such matters have to be discussed. Similarly matters of introduction receive only as much attention as is necessary for the exposition to be clear.
