PREFACE T JLhe Forest Park Foundation was created in 1939 by Mr. W. H. Sommer, Dr. Leslie Rutherford, and Mr. Howard Kinsey for the purpose of improving the care of the aged. In 1950, the Foundation completed a modern institution for the care of the aged and chronically ill in Peoria, Illinois. It has alsó established an Institute for Rehabilitation which offers services to the totál community of Peoria, but has had special interest in the problems of the aging. The Foundation has played a role in over-all community organization not only to improve services to the elderly, but to offer opportunity to older people to participate more actively in community life. Early in its program, the Foundation recognized the need for knowledge about research studies on all aspects of aging. To this end, a grant was made to Stanford University for the publication of A Classified Bibliography of Gerontology and Geriatrics in 1951. In the years following 1951, the Foundation has continued to support, by grants to the Jourtial of Gerontology, the quarterly publication of references to new studies and reports as they appeared. The many Ietters received from investigators and workers in the field of aging indicate the value of this service and led to the decision to assemble the references published since 1951 in a second volume of the bibliography. Responsibility for the selection and classification of the references has been in the hands of Dr. Nathan W. Shock, Chief, Gerontology Branch, National Heart Institute, National Institute of Health, and the Baltimore City Hospitals. The bibliography thus represents the cooperative efforts of the Gerontology Branch and the Foundation. It is hoped that this work will aid and stimulate further research on the important problems of aging. The Forest Park Foundation peoria, illinois
