Foreword
This biography of Dr. L. Nelson Bell was first published in 1971. It has been revised and edited by the author, John Pollock, with the help of my wife, Ruth, and other members of the family and staff. It has a number of new and exciting stories about Dr. Bell and adds the events of the latter part of his life when he was elected moderator of the Presbyterian Church in the United States.
When we went back to China in 1988 arid visited the hospital where Dr. Bell labored for twenty-five years, we met a number of people who had not only been influenced by him but whose lives he had saved through his brilliant knowledge of medicine and whom he had influenced in a deeper spiritual commitment.
Dr. Nelson Bell was one of the major influences in my life and ministry. In fact, as I look back I am convinced that one of the reasons God, in His providence, allowed Ruth Bell to become my wife was so that Dr. Nelson Bell would become my father-in-law!
He had three successful careers: as a professional baseball player; as a medical missionary to China for twenty-five years; and as one of the most influential editors and writers in the evangelical world. I could add a fourth career— that of being my most faithful counselor and advisor right up to his death in 1973. Hardly a day has passed since then that I haven't found myself recalling his wisdom and how he would have met a particular situation or problem.
